| Kurzbeschreibung |
In most animals and in humans, motile sperms are characterized by very compact haploid nuclei. Often this is accompanied by an exchange of nucleosome based chromatin structure to a protamine based 200 fold more compact status with an intermediate status characterized by transition proteins in mammals (for review see Wouters-Tyrou et al., 1998, Braun, 2001). These histone replacing proteins are synthesised by mRNAs specifically transcribed in male germ cells and store for several days and weeks before being translated Blümer et al., 2002; Hempel et al., 2006). This requires extensive cell type specific transcriptional and translational control by translational repression and activation at the specific time point required for chromatin condensation (for review see Sassone-Corsi, 2002; Renkawitz-Pohl et al, 2005)).
